The 4 reasons why you have vaginal discharge and when the doctor must intervene

Vaginal discharges are normal. The glands inside your vagina and your cervix make small amounts of fluid. This fluid comes out of the vagina every day, removing old cells that have lined the vagina. It’s the way your body keeps your vagina healthy and clean. A change in colour, odour or amount of discharge with other associated signs may require the intervention of a physician. Here are 5 main causes to guide you when to go to the hospital:

Fungal

  • Colour and texture: white, and cottage cheese texture
  • Symptoms and signs include swelling and pain around the vulva and intense itching and painful intercourse.
  • Treatment: is based on the antifungals prescribed in the hospital after confirmation.

Vagina bacterial ointment

  • Colour and texture: white, gray or yellowish loss
  • Odour: A fishy smell that is strongest after sex or after showering with soap
  • Associated symptoms: Itching or burning vaginally, slight redness and swelling of the vagina or vulva.
  • Treatment: is based on antibiotics prescribed in the hospital after confirmation.

Trichomonas

  • Colour and texture: aqueous, yellowish or greenish fluid loss.
  • Odour: an unpleasant odour.
  • Symptoms and associated signs: Pain and itching during urine. More obvious after rules.
  • Treatment: is based on antibiotics prescribed in the hospital after confirmation.

Two sexually transmitted infections, chlamydia and gonorrhea

  • They can also cause vaginal disorders. These are infections of the cervix caused by bacteria. Sometimes the only symptom may be an increase in vaginal discharge.
  • Treatment: is based on antibiotics prescribed in the hospital after confirmation.

Others

  • Changes can occur if the normal balance of healthy bacteria in your vagina is disrupted. Many things can upset the balance of a healthy vagina, including soft showers, feminine hygiene sprays, some soaps, antibiotics, diabetes, pregnancy, or infections.
  • Treatment: especially the prevention of things that can disrupt the normal balance of vaginal flora.

Prevention

  • Toilet: After using the toilet, always wipe back and forth. This can help prevent bacteria from your rectal area from entering your vagina.
  • Underwear: Wear cotton underwear during the day and change your underwear 2-3 times a day. Cotton allows your genital area to “breathe”. Do not wear underwear at night.
  • Tight pants: Avoid wearing tight pants, tights, swimsuits for long periods.
  • Change your laundry or fabric softener if you think it could irritate your genital area.
  • Condoms: Latex in condoms and diaphragms and sperm gels that are used for birth control can be irritating to some women. If you think any of these things are a problem for you, talk to your doctor about other types of contraceptives.
  • Shower: Avoid whirlpools. Bath or shower daily and pat your genital area dry.
  • Vaginal friction: Avoid douching with irritating products.
  • Avoid feminine hygiene sprays, coloured or scented toilet paper, deodorant pads or tampons and bubble bath.
